Getting to Know: Mike Martin

As a Network Planner Specialist I, Mike Martin designs and models fiber routes in potential new markets and for new customer services. I also update all our Network maps quarterly and add estimated build costs to potential structures daily.

Before working at DQE what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?

Early in my career, I was a software trainer for MapInfo. I traveled the country, training clients on the MapInfo GIS application. I saw many places and cities throughout the US and met many different people that helped shape my career.

Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us.

I studied some of the earliest desktop GIS systems when I got my degree in Geography at Penn State.

What advice do you have for prospective DQE candidates?

Expect to be challenged at DQE. It is a very fast-paced industry, and if you are willing to learn, you can do great things here.

What are three career lessons you’ve learned thus far?

First, complete all work on time. Second, treat coworkers and customers with respect, and you will receive the same respect back. Third, do not take anything personally; it’s only a business. Criticism is a good thing.

What does true leadership mean to you?

Leadership is not only being a mentor but also being willing to learn.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I like spending time with my family and doing anything outdoors – fishing, hunting, swimming, the beach, or a nice backyard barbeque.

What has been your favorite project so far at DQE?

My favorite project so far has been planning the initial design for the Harrisburg expansion. This was one of our largest expansions, and I helped design the initial models that were the basis for the currently constructed routes.

What are you most excited about accomplishing in your role?

I am most excited to design fiber routes for new markets and see our footprint grow throughout PA and neighboring states.
