Getting to Know: Don Wood

As a Network Operations Center Technician, Don Wood oversees projects from start to finish and ensures they are completed on time.

Before working at DQE, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?

I owned and Operated a Christian Family Bookstore. I also worked as a part-time statistician for the Toronto Blue Jays for eight years. I saw 649 games for free!

Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us.

I was a hockey goaltender for 22 years, finishing up playing with former and retired pros.

What advice do you have for prospective DQE candidates?

You’re not thrown to the wolves here at DQE. Leadership and your colleagues are team players ready to assist you through and beyond your learning curve.

What are three career lessons you’ve learned thus far?

Admit your mistakes and use them as learning opportunities. 

Let your yes be yes and your no be no.

Laughter is the only tranquilizer that doesn’t have negative side effects.

What are you most excited about accomplishing in your role?

As a people person, I still get a kick out of resolving and fixing an issue for our customers. I enjoy streamlining processes and implementing ideas that make us more efficient. 

What do you like to do in your spare time?

My wife Holly and I have a 10-acre hobby farm that keeps us busy with chores. We are pretty involved with our church family. I was a Civil War reenactor since 1990 and in the movies Gettysburg and God’s and Generals.
