Getting to Know: Emily Garvin

As Business Support Associate II, Emily Garvin provides customers with high-quality service pre- and post-sale and assists internally with escalated requests during and after the project implementation.

What are three career lessons you’ve learned thus far?

One of three lessons I’ve learned thus far in my career is that you need to be flexible, you will work with many different personalities, and I’ve learned to pivot conversations based on those personalities. The second lesson I’ve learned is if you don’t know something, it is okay to ask for help. The third lesson I’ve learned is to take time for myself. Work-life balance is a real thing and is very important. If one chooses not to take care of themselves outside of work, their work life will suffer and vice-versa.

Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us.

Born and raised in Pittsburgh – but I am a huge Ohio State Football fan!

What advice do you have for prospective DQE candidates?

My advice for a prospective DQE candidate would be to learn quickly. DQE Communications is a fast-paced telecom company where new projects and avenues ramp up quickly. There are many moving parts within DQE Communications, and if one can learn and act quickly in any role, one will be very successful.

What are you most excited about accomplishing in your role?

My most exciting accomplishment in my role is the progression of how I got to my position. I will be at the company for four years in the upcoming year, and it has been an exciting rollercoaster. I started as a sales representative, assisting the sales support team with RFPs in 2019-2020. Then, I moved entirely into sales support during 2020, which was all remote due to COVID. There was a department reorganization only five months into my new role, which brought a lot of responsibility for one person but seeing the department grow to what it is now has been the most exciting accomplishment.

What are your hopes for the company in the future?

My hopes for DQE are to continue growing as a business, expand our network coverage, and offer new products/services. Over the past four years, there has been exponential growth. I am excited to see what comes in the next coming years.
