Getting to Know: Jane Ruth

As Carrier Sales Senior Account Manager, Jane Ruth manages a base of large wholesale/carrier accounts. She develops, presents, and follows up on sales solutions to new and existing customers.

Before working at DQE, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?

After teaching elementary school for a few years, abroad and in my hometown, I decided to open a restaurant. For the next 18 years, I had such a wonderful experience…it was hard work, but it’s a super interesting and rewarding business!

Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us.

I ride on the back of my husband’s motorcycles, a collection of at least 7 that he’s restored over time – the latest one is a 1977 BMW R-75/7 (that model means nothing to me, but maybe to an enthusiast). I love the color, it’s retro burnt orange.

What is the most exciting thing you’ve accomplished in your role?

My transition from Enterprise to Wholesale, about 8 years ago, was an exciting challenge. Instead of selling to and working with the end-users, I work with Carrier Relation Managers and Engineers from all over the states. They oversee their sales teams and end users, and I assist them through each step to the final sale. Over the years, I’ve enjoyed building these new relations and enjoy working with the Carrier side. I think this has led to a positive image of DQE in the broader Carrier arena and helped to contribute to revenue growth.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I enjoy my family, my three grown children, and their partners, but I’m also appreciating the empty nest stage! My husband, Jay, and I have more free time to do what we want. We love to read, to travel and see new things, try new foods, and meet new people. We also enjoy being at home, we live on 10 acres in an 1850 farmhouse, so there are always projects to do. When we’re home, I love to cook (Jay loves to consume) and we enjoy entertaining friends and neighbors.

What drew you to DQE originally?

After I sold my business in 2008, I found myself working with a start up in Pittsburgh, Met-Net Communications. I was the salesperson for all Enterprise accounts in Pittsburgh. It was a lot of fun to help build the first METRO E company in Pittsburgh, partnering with and utilizing the DQE dark fiber. DQE then bought Met-Net, and I was hired on in the role of Enterprise Sales in September of 2011. Although I live on the other side of the state, I really loved working in Pittsburgh, and selling to all the interesting businesses there. I find Pittsburgh to be a welcoming place and am grateful to have met so many nice people through my job.

What advice do you have for prospective DQE candidates?

Integrity is an important part of any business role and business culture. My coworkers at DQE have the highest integrity, and are dedicated, supportive and most of all friendly and fun! It’s a gift to work with them, and something I hope future DQE employees value and find important to be part of and contribute towards.
